Summer 2014- The movie

Summer 2014- The movie

With a very big budget movie on the horizon for next summer, Marvel decided to relaunch this title with the big boys attached to it.

Brian Bendis, who basically made the Avengers a top seller again (way before the movie release) is the writer on this book.  Sara Pichelli has taken over the art reigns from Steve McNiven and she is doing a great job!  See for yourself below.

So who are the Guardians of the Galaxy and why should you care?  Strap your seatbelts and prepare to blast off into outer space.  Picture the Avengers, in outer space, but with a hot green badass ninja type assassin, a a human whos spirit was taken from his body and placed into a new muscle bound alien type body with enhanced everything abilities who has a propensity to use knives of all kinds, A half human half alien (who also looks human) starfighter who happens to also be the son of a royal dynasty, a giant tree (yes a giant tree), and a space raccoon who has giant guns!  Yes this is real and yes this is awesome!

The Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter Quill is the Star-Lord and is the leader of this ragtag group of literal guardians of the galaxy.  He is an expert at close quarter combat and has a vast knowledge of many alien cultures and customs.  His suit that you see him in allows him to be stronger than the average human/alien hybrid and also allows him to travel through space.  He has an element gun that allows him to use one of the four elements at a given time.  Finally he has a psychic link to his ship.

Drax the Destroyer is a human who is turned into a perfect warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos.  Yes THAT Thanos who showed up at the end of the Avengers movie credits.  Drax’s spirit as a human was collected and put in the green muscle bound body you see before you.  Drax can shoot concussive blasts from his hands and has powers such as super strength, flight, the ability to travel at high speeds in outer space without air, food, or water.  Pretty amazing huh? Yeah well then there is

Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos (Him again!) and the last of her species. Her powers include superhuman strength and agility and an accelerated healing factor.  She is a bad ass assassin who will stop at nothing from getting what she wants.

Groot, yes he is a giant tree and can only speaking by saying the word Groot.  Yes he is ridiculous and yes he is awesome.  He is a descendent of the monarch royal family on his home Planet X.  He has an exceptional education and has been killed on at least three occasions.  He has the ability to regrow his body and consciousness from a small splinter of wood.  His best buddy on the team and the only one who understands him completely is

Rocket Raccoon!  He hates being called a raccoon and is not an earth raccoon but is an alien from a very distant and remote part of space.  He possesses the normal attributes of an Earth raccoon, including speed, an acute sense of smell, sight, hearing and touch.  He is a very accomplished pilot and is usually Star-Lord’s right hand man errr raccoon.  He is also a total wiseass!

Finally we meet the newest Guardian.  Iron Man.  Yes That Iron Man.  Tony Stark came to outer space on a mission in Guardians #1 and got mixed up in this mess and is now a part of the team, well at least for now.  He is a good addition to the team and I’m pretty sure Marvel threw him in this book to 1) give it name/character recognition and 2) link it to the rest of the Marvel U.

Finally onto issue 5 and why you should run out and buy it immediately.  This woman is named Angela and after the picture I will explain why she is one of the biggest deals Marvel has done in a long time.

Angela Joins the Marvel U!

A real brief history of Angela is that she is an angel who works for heaven as sort of a bounty hunter.  This was her past when she was in Spawn comic books.  Spawn is published by Todd McFarlane under Image Comics.  The problem is Angela was co-created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane when working on Spawn together.  Neil sued Todd over characters and part of the settlement was for Neil to own Angela, and a few other characters.  Neil recently sold Angela to Marvel comics, which is a big deal.  She made her first appearance in the final chapter of the recent crossover called Age of Ultron.  (Avengers 2 will be called Avengers: Age of Ultron by the way…)  Ok now we have that out of the way this issue is a tease of Angela being very confused as to why she is in this new universe and her wanting to find who did it and why.  She is very pissed and is a nasty lady.

This was a very fun read as this book as been from the beginning.  The King highly recommends picking up this issue and the 4 previous issues, if you can find them.  Once next summer hits and this movie is a huge success, these issues will be even harder to find and worth even more money.  Get them!
